Take The High Road

I am often perplexed by the lack of civility and humanity when it comes to divorce.  The once happy couple on their wedding day can turn against each other with so much hatred, vengeance and loathing.  I am not talking about abusive situations but rather couples who seemingly once upon a time had a mutual respect for one another.  If your relationship is over then that’s really okay but to stay so angry for so long at that other person is destructive and it has a ripple effect.  This type of attitude will only damage your children’s emotional well being (whether they are adults or young children); getting caught up in winning and proving you were wronged by the other party will only financially ruin both of you (it’s 50/50 in married life unless you have a marriage contract); the stress of divorce will cause damage to your mental and physical well being.  Many people believe that the legal system will see that they are right and the other party is wrong.  In most cases this is not going to happen. So, choose a lawyer who is not going to further inflame the situation.  Choose a lawyer who can manage your expectations and can guide you thoughtfully through this difficult process.  Choose a lawyer who treats your ex-spouse and their lawyer with civility and respect.  Take the high road and not the low road and everyone will be much better off.
